about aari
AARI (Accelerated Adolescent Reading Initiative) is a small group reading intervention built upon five premises:
Beck and McKeown's Questioning the Author, Raphael and Pearson's Questioning Answer Relationship (QAR), Chambliss and Calfee's text structures, set in the context of a discourse community (Swales) where the teacher scaffolds student learning through questions designed to build inferential reasoning with the text. AARI moves students who are two or more grade levels below in reading comprehension through grade level proficiency in academic/expository texts. Selected students take AARI in addition to their English class and in place of one elective.
